ABOUT THE ARTIST
Steven Riddle grew up in Harmony, a small town in western Pennsylvania. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004. Currently an MFA candidate at Towson University, he lives and works in Baltimore, MD. Steven has shown his work at the Andy Warhol Museum, Current Gallery, Nudashank, and at the Aqua art fair Miami, and his work has been featured online at Juxtaposed, Svartkons, and Brownpaperbag. When he is not making art he enjoys making good snacks, gardening and collecting rocks.
“My work explores ideas of misperceptions and misrepresentations of nature and cultural traditions. Natural rock formations known as geodes can be artificially colored using man-made methods. This results in the perversion of the original colors that are found in natural formations, the dyed geodes displaying a falsification of nature. Tchotchke markets exploit indigenous societies, stealing, altering, and profiting from their culture through souvenir sales. These mementos have no cultural value other than being a product of a consumer-driven economy. They are misrepresentations which add to the destruction of cultural traditions.
“I chose to work on paper for this series because I view its physical properties as temporal, and its fragility as appropriately related to the relationship between nature and indigenous culture
ABOUT THE PRINT
This print is made in-house using archival pigment inks on heavyweight 100% cotton fibre archival paper. Each print is custom-trimmed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Edition dimensions reflect actual paper sizes, not the printed image itself. While we try to maximize image size on all prints, a minimum border of .5 inches is left to allow for easy framing.
