ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jon MacNair was born in South Korea and grew up in Southeastern Michigan. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art where he earned a BFA in illustration before returning to Michigan, where he works as a freelance illustrator and gallery artist. His illustrations have been featured in publications such as Pittsburgh City Paper, The Riverfront Times and Baltimore Magazine and he has exhibited in galleries in Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Glasgow (UK) and NYC. His fine art has also been featured in such publications as Faesthetic, Beautiful Decay and IdN Magazine.
“My work has always been quite narrative in tone. As a trained illustrator it makes sense that my personal work also seems to want to tell a story. Sometimes I have a narrative in mind that I want to depict, but other times I let the story unfold before me as I work. Over the past couple years I have become more and more aware of the therapeutic effect drawing seems to have on me and what kinds of things I learn about myself in the process. I like to create scenarios that play out on the paper; vignettes the viewer can ponder the origins of and hopefully imbue with their own meanings and interpretations.
“There is a definite sense of darkness and mysticism that permeates my landscapes and characters. Often I place my characters in a nighttime setting. At night, nothing is what it seems; shapes shift and shadows loom, tricking the eye and making us question what is real and what is imagined. There’s an introspective kind of silence and solitude that occurs only at night. The dreary realities of life melt away, allowing myth and magic to emerge from the darkness to weave fantastical, dreamlike narratives.”
ABOUT THE PRINT
This print is made in-house using archival pigment inks on heavyweight 100% cotton fibre archival paper. Each print is custom-trimmed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Edition dimensions reflect actual paper sizes, not the printed image itself. While we try to maximize image size on all prints, a minimum border of .5 inches is left to allow for easy framing.
